William Basinski is an American composer who piece ‘The Disintegration Loops’ will be performed for the first time at the Southbank on the 12th August.
‘The Disintegration Loops’ were composed by Basinski when he attempted to transfer some of his old pieces from tape to digital. However the original tapes were in such a poor condition they frayed and warped on the tape heads thus destroying the original compositions. Basinski was left with the sound of his work distorting and, if you like, dying.
The significance of this sound was made even more poignant by the fact that he completed this process on 11th September 2001. Basinski’s home is New York and as he watched the towers fall from his balcony he recorded the process on video recorded with his ‘Disintegration Loop’ echoing over the top.
I’m not 100% sure how the London Contemporary Orchestra are planning to capture such a unique sound, but I’m sure that it’ll be a event not to be missed.
